Fire fighters burn foundations and organizations are some of the largest donors and sponsors of burn units, burn camps and burn prevention campaigns across North America . The efforts that are made on behalf of burn survivors by fire fighters to ensure that the most advanced hospital facilities, treatment options and survivor support programs are extraordinary. The stories below showcase these outstanding efforts.

The Firefighters Burn Fund Inc. of Manitoba

The Firefighters Burn Fund Inc. (FBF) of Manitoba, established in 1978, has raised more than $7,500,000 for the treatment and support of burn survivors in Manitoba in the past 30 years.

In April 2007, FBF participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony for the official opening of a new, dedicated burn unit - to be known as The Manitoba Firefighters Burn Unit. The motto for the new unit will be: "Excellence is our Standard." The Fund hopes to help the Unit become a center of excellence, to match the motto.

Additionally, they are currently working with hospital administration to establish a Chair of Burns and have proposed contributing $1,000,000 toward a $3,000,000 endowment that would serve as an annual source of research funding.

Essex County Burn Foundation

The Essex County Burn Foundation (ECBF) of Windsor, Ontario, comprised of members of IAFF local 455 Windsor Fire Fighters, helps support burn survivors in the community. Currently, the Foundation purchases all Jobst suits, supplies all newborns with a bath thermometer and has purchased burn gel kits for over 40 fire trucks in the county.

Additionally, due to the closure of the burn unit in their local area, the ECBF has created a new program to assist families with the expenses they incur when traveling to be with their loved ones who are undergoing treatment in the Toronto Burn Unit. ECBF is looking to partner with the local fire department and the community to gain support for their efforts to continue existing programs, develop new ones and ensure that the burn unit that fire fighters might need is one of the best.
