Survivor Story

Burn Survivor Heidi Cave Inspires Hope in Tragedy

On June 12, 1998, Heidi Cave was struck by a reckless driver while driving near her childhood home in Abbotsford , British Columbia . She was 23 years old. The impact was so severe, that the car tumbled into a ravine, caught fire and killed her best friend sitting in the passenger seat. Fuel leaking from the engine caused the overturned car to catch on fire - with Heidi trapped in it.

Heidi, who was burned over 52 percent of her body, endured 20 surgeries and    ultimately had both legs amputated below her knees. She spent two weeks in a coma in Vancouver 's Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit, another seven months at the British Columbia Professional Firefighters' Burn Clinic and six months at the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Clinic recovering.

Today, Heidi is a wife and mother. Her life does not revolve around the accident; rather, she shares her story to inspire others to renew their hopes.

Listen to Heidi address the IAFF Convention Delegates at the IAFF 48th Biennial Convention in Toronto, Ontario.

Connect With Other Survivors

For the past 30 years, the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors has been dedicated to empowering everyone affected by a burn injury through peer support, education and advocacy.

They understand the importance of connecting with others who have had a similar experience and can assist in the healing process. They provide a secure section on their Web site that allows you to share your story and create a network of support.

World Burn Congress

The World Burn Congress, a program of the Phoenix Society for Burn Survivors, brings together over 700 burn survivors, their families, caregivers, burn care professionals and fire fighters from around the world. The Congress provides an international forum to encourage and facilitate an exchange of knowledge and support within the burn community. More
