Burn
Survivor Heidi Cave Inspires Hope in Tragedy
On June 12, 1998, Heidi
Cave was struck by a reckless driver while driving near her
childhood home in Abbotsford , British Columbia . She was 23 years
old. The impact was so severe, that the car tumbled into a ravine,
caught fire and killed her best friend sitting in the passenger
seat. Fuel leaking from the engine caused the overturned car to
catch on fire - with Heidi trapped in it.

Heidi,
who was burned over 52 percent of her body, endured 20 surgeries
and ultimately had both legs amputated below
her knees. She spent two weeks in a coma in Vancouver 's Burn
and Plastic Surgery Unit, another seven months at the British
Columbia Professional Firefighters' Burn Clinic and six months
at the G.F. Strong Rehabilitation Clinic recovering.
Today, Heidi is a wife and mother. Her life does not revolve
around the accident; rather, she shares her story to inspire
others to renew their hopes.
Listen to Heidi address the IAFF Convention
Delegates at the IAFF 48th Biennial Convention in Toronto,
Ontario.
